The characters were designed and produced to be interchangeable for dynamically created animations. The visitor to the ecard site would follow steps to create their ecard: choose character A; choose character B; choose setting; add message and other information regarding the sender and recipient. These "variables" would then be compiled and rendered into a downloadable animation of a chance meeting... ending with a "mouthwash for just incase" message. As a result, it was determined that the characters had to be the same height and act the same... for 1999, that was pretty advanced. Today, better solutions could have been created to have more unique characters.
